PET SPEAKING PART 2: Listen carefully

PET SPEAKING PART 2

speak_clearly_logoTIPS

  • You should talk to your partner, but make sure you speak clearly so that the examiner can also hear you.
  • Talk about all the ideas in the task, and suggest others if you can.
  • Remember to talk about the things in the picture - don't just talk generally.
  • Make sure you show interest in what your partner is saying. Try to respond to what they say.
  • You will need to keep this discussion going for two to three minutes.
  • If you have time, try to summarise the reasons for your final choice in the end.
  • Remember to look at your partner when you are speaking - not the interlocutor.

USEFUL VOCABULARY

Starting:

Let's start with this one, shall we?
Shall we start with this one?

Asking your partner:

So, what do you think?
Do you think that's a good idea?

Agreeing:

You are right.
That's a great idea.
That's a good idea.
I think so too.
That's a good point.
I see what you mean.

Disagreeing:

I don't think we should ...
That's not such a good idea ...
It's a good idea, but ...
I'm not sure we should ...
Well, I'm not sure about that.

Making suggestions:

Let's...
Why don't we...
How about...
Do you want to...
What if we...
What do you think about ...ing
I think this would be good because...
This wouldn't be such a good idea because...

Asking for opinions:

How about you?
What do you think about...?
That's a good idea, isn't it?
Do you agree ...?

Showing preference:

I think this is better because...
I prefer...

Giving reasons:

... so that ...
... because ...
... that's why ...
... so ...

Summing up:

So, shall we choose this one?
Which one shall we choose?
Do we agree that this is the best one?

AWARE AND PREPARE

I'm going to describe a situation to you.

You are going on a cycling trip in the countryside with a group of friends. You need to decide what things would be useful to put in your backpack and take with you. Talk together about the differnt things it would be best to take.

Here is a picture with some ideas to help you.

I'll say that again.

You are going on a cycling trip in the countryside with a group of friends. You need to decide what things would be useful to put in your backpack and take with you. Talk together about the differnt things it would be best to take.

All right? Talk together.

Before you start, think of some things:

  • Are there any things here that might not be so useful?
  • What about the swimming things?
  • What will the weather be like?
  • Will you need the jacket?
  • Is it safe to wear headphones while you are cycling?

Now listen to two students doing the task.

LEARN FROM MISTAKES

I'm going to describe a situation to you.

You are a member of a local youth club. The club wants to advertise a party for club members, and the leader has decided to ask you to help make posters to put around the club. Talk together about the differnt things you could use to make the posters, and then decide which things would be the best to use.

PET SPEAKING PART 3: Keep talking

PET SPEAKING PART 3

TIPS

(There are people on the sports field or in the restaurant...)
(They are playing football or they are having a party...)
(They might be sportsmen or students… или they are happy or dissapointed...)

REMEMBER!

  • You will need to speak for approximatly a minute.
  • You have to talk on your own about what you can see in a photograph, so try to say as much as you can about the photo.
  • Don't worry if you don't know the word for something in the picture you are given - use the language you DO know to find a way around it and keep talking.
